The Intercultural Classroom: Where Empathy and Learning Meet

An IATEFL monthly webinar presented by Cecilia Nobre

In the context of our increasingly interconnected world, the role of intercultural competence in language teaching has never been more vital. This webinar offers insights into the effective fusion of intercultural language teaching principles with student-focused lesson approaches. Drawing on the works of Scarino (2013) and Liddicoat & McConachy (2022), we'll delve into the significance of genuine communication, emergent language, and the empowerment of learners. Participants will be introduced to reflective methodologies such as video-based discussions and practical judgement exercises, all aimed at deepening intercultural understanding and honing critical thought. The session will also advocate for the use of reflective journals, enabling students to self-assess and address potential biases. By the end of the webinar, participants will be equipped with pragmatic techniques to guide learners towards meaningful communication that is both culturally sensitive and articulate.
